India to set up bio-ethanol plants under a new initiative

6 Aug 2024

The Indian government has announced plans to establish multiple bio-ethanol plants nationwide under the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana. This initiative is designed to promote the production of second-generation (2G) bioethanol from cellulosic and lignocellulosic biomass, fostering cleaner fuel production and bolstering India’s energy security objectives.

The Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana will provide financial assistance to set up six commercial and four demonstration 2G bioethanol plants. The commercial facilities will be located at:

– Panipat, Haryana: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

– Bargarh, Odisha: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

– Bathinda, Punjab: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

– Numaligarh, Assam: Numaligarh Refineries Limited

– Davangere, Karnataka: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd.

– Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh: RCPL

Additionally, demonstration plants will be established in various locations, including Panipat and Sagauli, to showcase advanced bioethanol production technologies.

These 2G bioethanol plants will employ innovative technologies to convert biomass into ethanol, providing a cleaner and renewable fuel alternative. This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, and promoting rural economic development through sustainable energy production.

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) has already inaugurated a 2G bioethanol plant in Panipat, Haryana, and has also begun developing a third-generation bioethanol facility at the same site. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to scale up biofuel production and integrate it into the national energy framework.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Suresh Gopi, emphasized the importance of these plants in enhancing India’s renewable energy capacity and achieving its environmental goals. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting innovative biofuel technologies that contribute to a sustainable energy future.
